What Is a Dental Crown?

Full Coverage. Full Protection.

A dental crown is a cap that covers the entire visible surface of a tooth above the gum line. It restores the tooth to its original shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are the treatment of choice when a tooth has lost significant structure to decay, fracture, or root canal treatment.

At Tulip Dental, Dombivli, crowns are fabricated by India's finest dental laboratories to precise shade and contour specifications. Our first recommendation is always zirconia — for its combination of strength, aesthetics, and biocompatibility.

Our honest recommendation: For most patients at Tulip Dental, Dombivli, we recommend multilayer zirconia — the best combination of aesthetics, strength, and durability. We will always explain which crown is most appropriate for your specific tooth position, bite forces, and clinical situation.

FAQ

Crown Questions

Which crown is best in Dombivli — zirconia or ceramic?+
For most patients, multilayer zirconia is the best all-round choice — combining exceptional aesthetics (especially the gradient effect for front teeth) with very high strength (1000+ MPa). All-ceramic (E-Max) is preferred only when the highest translucency is needed for front teeth. Dr. Nirmita will advise based on your specific tooth and bite.
How long do zirconia crowns last in Dombivli?+
With proper care (brushing, flossing, regular check-ups, avoiding biting very hard objects), zirconia crowns can last 15–20+ years. Zirconia does not chip or fracture under normal bite forces — one of its key advantages over PFM crowns.
Is a crown always needed after root canal treatment?+
For back teeth (premolars and molars): yes, strongly recommended. Root-treated posterior teeth are more brittle and at high risk of longitudinal fracture — which is irreparable and leads to extraction. A crown protects against this. For front teeth: case-dependent. Dr. Nirmita will advise after assessing how much tooth structure remains.
What is the difference between monolithic and multilayer zirconia?+
Monolithic zirconia is one uniform material throughout — maximum strength (1200+ MPa), but a more uniform colour without the natural gradient from incisal edge to gum. Multilayer zirconia has different shading layers — the translucency and colour gradient mimics a natural tooth far better, especially for front teeth. Multilayer is slightly less strong than monolithic, but still extremely durable (1000+ MPa) for most bite forces.
